A Bricklayer lays brick, stone, structural tile, marble, concrete block, pre-cast concrete panels, fabricated masonry panels, and any other masonry materials to build or repair walls, partitions, fireplaces, sewers, and other structures. Bricklayers also install firebrick linings in industrial furnaces.
Length of Apprenticeship:
- Three (3) years-Minimum of 4,500 hours of on-the-job training.
- Apprentice Bricklayers begin their training by going to Pre-Apprentice training for 12 weeks.
- Apprentices receive a mandatory minimum of 144 hours of classroom instruction per year.
Wage Information:
1st 6 months 50% of journeyman wage
6 months-1 year 60% of journeyman wage
1 year-1.5 years 70% of journeyman wage
1.5 years-2 years 80% of journeyman wage
2 years-2.5 years 90% of journeyman wage
2.5 years-3 years 95% of journeyman wage
Completion of 3 years 100% of journeyman wage

Basic Requirements:
- Must be 17 years of age.
- Must be physically able to perform the work of the trade.
- Must pass an aptitude test.
- Must take an oral interview.
Working Conditions:
Bricklayers spend the majority of time working outdoors in all types of weather conditions.
Abilities:
Must be physically fit to perform the job of a bricklayer. (Some of the masonry units may be heavy.)
Entry Process:
- Complete application at Local 74 office. (Applications are available all year M–F 8 am–4:30 pm)
- Pay a $20 Application Fee.
- Take and pass an aptitude test.
- Applicants with passing scores will be given an oral interview.
