Plumber

A Plumber’s work consists of plan reading and installing and maintaining plumbing systems. These systems include underground water supply, storm water, sewer drainage, fixture installation and waste and vent piping both inside and outside of buildings.

Length of Apprenticeship:
Five (5) years.

  • Apprentices work on-the-job four days a week and spend one day per week in the classroom during the first three years of the program.
  • The 4th and 5th years consist of evening classes and on-the-job training. (1,750 hours per year.)

Wage Information:
1st 6 months 34% of journeyman wage
2nd 6 months 37% of journeyman wage
2nd year 44% of journeyman wage
3rd year 50% of journeyman wage
4th year 66% of journeyman wage
5th year 75% of journeyman wage
Journeyman Level 100% of journeyman wage (Specific wage information will be provided to accepted applicants.)

Basic Requirements:

  • Must be at least 18 years old by December 31st of the year of application.
  • Must have a high school diploma or a G.E.D. Certificate.
  • Must show two pieces of photo identification.
  • Must have a birth certificate.
  • Must pass a drug test.
  • Must pass a physical exam.
  • Must have a valid driver’s license and reliable transportation.

Working Conditions:
Plumbers work in all types of weather and in very dirty environments.

Recommended Preparatory Classes:
Mathematics, mechanical drawing, reading comprehension, industrial arts and problem solving classes.

Abilities:

  • Must be able to work at high levels with ladders and scaffolds.
  • Must be able to work in confined spaces.
  • Must have excellent work ethics.

Work Experience:
(Helpful but not necessary for acceptance.) Previous experience with construction work is beneficial.

Entry Process:
Applications will be accepted every Thursday, starting January 8, 2004–March 25, 2004 from 9am–11am and 1pm–3pm.
Extended hours will be available on the 2nd and 4th Thursday evenings in February, March and April from 6pm–8pm

Requirements:

  • 18 years of age or older.
  • 17 years of age for High School Seniors (must provide student I.D.)

  • Two forms of I.D. including one photo I.D.
  • Photo Copy of Birth Certificate

  • Photo Copy of Diploma or G.E.D.
  • Water sealed letter from a High School will be accepted.
  • Water sealed transcripts with the graduation date will be accepted.
  • Registered: U.S. Department of Labor, Bureau of Apprenticeship Training
    • Complete and return application.
    • Take and pass an aptitude test.
    • Complete a personal experience form.
    • Obtain a letter of recommendation or an ‘intent to hire’ letter.
    • Based on a combination of accrued points formed from three preceding components, applicants  are given a rank.
    • Accepted applicants must attend a mandatory orientation session. (This session is 40 hours long and is unpaid.)
    • Attend a mini-orientation.
    • Take and pass a drug test and physical. Passing these tests are a condition of initial employment for all individuals going to work in Local 130’s jurisdiction. More information about the tests and the dates of the tests will be provided to the successful applicants.
    • An apprentice must attend and successfully complete a five (5) day, forty (40) hour unpaid orientation week to enter in the program.
    • Sign a form verifying that the applicant has a current Driver’s License and dependable transportation.
    • Pay all book and license Fees on the first day of orientation.
    • Sign a “Scholarship Loan Agreement”.
    • Report to your assigned contractor immediately following orientation.
